Community Forum

New Senior Center Project

A facilitated community forum will be held in place of the Select Board meeting on November 9th to solicit public input about a new senior center. The session will begin at 6:30p.m. The public is welcome to attend the forum at the Chatham Town Hall Annex, 261 George Ryder Street, or participate virtually by video or call-in (+1 508-945-4410, phone conference ID: 286 925 281#). Those attending in-person must wear masks in the meeting room.

The forum will be moderated by Brad Schiff, President of Pierce-Cote, a cape-based marketing/communications firm.  Five questions will be posed to the public to solicit feedback from all participants.  Each participant will have three minutes to voice their opinion, concerns, and/or suggestions on next steps for a senior center. The forum questions are:

  1. Do you want a new senior center in Chatham? Why or why not?
  2. What were the lessons learned from the previous proposed senior center sites which were not approved? What can we do better this time?
  3. Where should a new Chatham senior center be located? What is your reasoning?
  4. What type of new programming and amenities would you like to see at the senior center?
  5. What else would you like us to know about the new senior center?

The public is encouraged to email comments on the questions or the community forum to: communityforum@chatham-ma.gov. Public comments will be accepted via email until Friday, November 12, 2021 at 5:00p.m.

Comments may also be submitted through the Community Voice portal of the Town’s website. For background on history of the senior center project, go to the New Senior Center Project webpage for summaries, resources, and specific meeting materials.

The input received during this forum will be compiled for the Select Board’s consideration at a later meeting, informing their decision on next steps to take regarding a senior center.

Bar chart of COVID-19 cases by month

COVID 19 Update

There have been a total of 406 cases of COVID 19 reported in Town since March 2020. There were 10 cases reported in October 2021 compared with 8 cases reported in October of 2020.

While our community's percent positivity rate has ticked up slightly to 1.25% (as of 10/28/2021), this is the 2nd lowest rate on the Cape.

The Health Division in conjunction with the Council on Aging and the Fire/Rescue Department is working to schedule and administre booster shoots fto our homebound population.

The Board of Health's Order mandating masks be worn by any individual age 2 years or older attending an indoor public meeting of any Town Board/Commission/Committee or any  gathering of two or more people in a Town building meeting room, including the Community Center gym and fitness room, remains in place.

Change Your Clock, Check Your Alarms

Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday November 7th and fire officials are issuing their seasonal reminder to check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms when you set your clocks back.

If you have older alarms, replace the alkaline batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or replace the entire device if it is more than 10 years old. Manufacturing dates are printed on the back of each device. Smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors every 5-7 years.

Replacement alarms should be photoelectric and have 10-year, sealed, non-replaceable, non-rechargeable batteries.

Community Center Elevator Access

The Community Center's elevator was the victim to a storm-related power surge and is not fully functioning.

All community organizations who hold meetings in the Community Center have been notified and members of the public should be aware that access to the second floor is by stairs only at this time. The elevator is accessing the office and lower levels of the building.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
