A Community Loss

This week our community lost a dedicated public servant.

Florence Seldin was an active and involved member of Town government since 1998 when she first volunteered to serve on the Town Manager Screening Committee. Florence subsequently served on the Human Services Committee from 1998-2001, the Affordable Housing Committee from 2000-2009, the Charter Review Committee in 2000, the Community Preservation Committee from 2001-2008, and served as the Town's representative to the Cape Cod Commission from 2006-2009.

Florence was elected to the Select Board for two terms from 2009-2015, presiding as Chair in 2011, 2012, and 2014. Not one to take a break, she was next appointed to the Finance Committee in 2015 and was currently its Vice Chair.

Florence was also an active member of the League of Women Voters of the Cape Cod Area and was its president from 1997 to 2000.

Florence was a staunch believer in the democratic process, and advocate for affordable housing. Her impact on our community was profound. We will miss her insight, her guidance, and her laugh.

We offer our deepest condolences to her husband Ira and their family.

Sylvan Gardens in the Spring

If you have never visited Sylvan Gardens, this is the perfect time of year to explore this 9.5 acre conservation area located off Old Main Street.

Purchased by the Town in 2004, the site was formerly the home of Rolf Sylvan's Lower Cape Nursery. Thousands of ornamental and native species are planted throughout the property, many of which are spring blooming bulbs. 2016 Annual Town Meeting approved Community Preservation Act funds to install an ADA compliant compressed stone path from the entrance to the White Pond and Black Pond overlook ensuring access for everyone.

For more information and directions to the trailhead, visit the Friends of Sylvan Gardens website.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
