April Fools Mark 16th YearJoin the April Fools of the Chatham Fire Department on Saturday, April 1st at 11:30 a.m. at Hardings Beach for their annual polar plunge. Our Firefighters have rallied support for amazing community members over the years and the 2023 beneficiaries are no exception. This year the event is held in support of one of their own, Firefighter Vance Bates. Vance has been a Firefighter/Paramedic with the CFD since 2005. This past year he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and began treatment in December 2022. His treatments have taken a toll physically, requiring him to miss time from work. During his treatment Vance's wife Adrian suffered a hemorrhagic stroke on December 22, 2022. While she is making great strides in her recovery, Adrian is now also unable to work. Vance has taken care of his community with pride and professionalism and now it is time for us to take care of him. We hope this is the biggest and best attended swim yet! Donations of all amounts are graciously accepted. T-shirts will be available for $25 prior to the event and any remaining will be sold at the swim. A post-swim BBQ will be held at the Chatham VFW immediately following the swim. If you would like to donate but are not able to attend, you may donate online via the “Support for Vance and Adrian Bates” GoFundMe page, or cash and checks may be sent to: April Fools, Chatham Fire Department,135 Depot Rd., Chatham, MA 02633.

The MainsheetThe name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community. In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
