Monomoy Regional High School athletes are competing in State Finals in three sports tomorrow!

In Division 4, the Field Hockey team will be facing off against #1 seeded and defending champions Uxbridge Spartans at WPI in Worcester at 2:30 p.m. and the Boys Soccer team is heading to Scituate to take on the #2 seeded team from Lynnfield at 6:15 p.m.

Representing MRHS in Division 3, Senior Gareth Vos is competing in Cross Country Championship Meet in Devens.

Natural Resources Director Named

Join us in welcoming Greg Berman as our new Director of Natural Resources

Mr. Berman spent the last fourteen years as the Coastal Processes Specialist for WHOI Sea Grant and the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension. In this role, he focused on fortifying coastal community resilience to climate change and hazards in Barnstable County.

Mr. Berman has provided direct technical assistance on coastal processes in the form of over 300 site visits on the Cape and Islands, typically with follow-up written reports on a wide variety of issues, issues including coastal bank stabilization, beach grass for erosion control, proposed revetment construction on coastal banks, and dune restoration. Recognized within scientific, nonprofit, and governmental spheres, he’s honed his communication skills through 30+ publications and over 200 presentations.

As a Barnstable County employee, he collaborated with all other relevant County employees (ex. Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Cape Cod Commission, Dredge, Regional Emergency Planning Committee, and Health & Environment). Mr. Berman’s expertise also spans municipal operations, including ethics, finances, budgets, and procurement. He has played a key role in shaping sections of WHOISG Strategic Plans and crafted multi-million-dollar budgets. Additionally, he’s actively supported towns in grant applications, recently assisting in securing three grants since 2021 with a combined value of over $500,000 for the Pleasant Bay Alliance.

Holiday Shopping Fair Tomorrow

Don't miss the annual Holiday Shopping Fair tomorrow at the Community Center, 712 Main Street, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over 40 vendors will be on hand selling unique wares and crafts to get your holiday shopping off to a great start. While you are there grab a snack and a raffle ticket in support of the Positive Afterschool Recreation for Kids (PARK) program.

Road Race on Sunday

Traffic Advisory!

Chatham in the Fall 10K race, sponsored by the Cape Cod Athletic Club, begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 19th near the intersection of Crowell Road and Lake Street and ends in front of Monomoy Regional Middle School.

The Chatham Police Department will provide escort ahead of the lead runner from start to finish. Officers will be posted along the route to facilitate safe passage of the runners. Several streets will need to be temporarily detoured and traffic redirected from 10:30 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. Please use extra caution when driving along any portion of the race route in that time frame.

Sewer Construction Update

Week of November 20th-24th

Site work will continue at Pump Station #3 (Meetinghouse Road) and Pump Station #4 (Twine Field Drive) in South Chatham. Site work is also expected to continue at the Queen Anne Road Pump Station (south side of Queen Anne Road and Oyster Pond Furlong intersection).

There will be no sewer construction work on Thursday, November 23rd or Friday, November 24th.

COVID-19 Test Kits Available at Annex

Keep you and your loved ones healthy this holiday season. The Health Division has free COVID-19 test kits available for property owners at the Town Office Annex, 261 George Ryder Road.

With holiday gatherings quickly approaching, pick-up a test kit to have on hand in case you or a family member experiences any symptoms. Share kindness, good cheer, and memories - not COVID-19!

Upcoming Public Hearings

The Select Board will hold the following public hearings during their regularly scheduled meetings at the Town Office Annex, 261 George Ryder Road, beginning at 5:30 p.m.:

November 28th

To consider a petition from Verizon New England, Inc. and NSTAR Electric Company d/b/a Eversource Energy to upgrade three (3) existing poles - 47/30, 47/31, 47/32 - with associated storm guying on the west side of Morris Island Road, and install three (3) new poles - 47/30A, 47/31A, 47/32A - with associated guying along the east side of Morris Island Road. This work and storm guying is requested by Eversource Energy to support the existing poles.

To consider the disbanding of the Aunt Lydia's Cove Committee in accordance with Section 5-2 of the Home Rule Charter.

In Case You Missed It

Parking Violation Fines Increasing

The Town's Parking Violation Fines increase on January 1, 2024.

The fine for standard violations will increase from $50 to $75 and the fine for parking in a handicap designated space without a required placard will increase from $50 to $300.

These increases were approved by the Select Board at its meeting on November 7, 2023.

Tuesday Talk at the Atwood

The Atwood Museum hosts is final virtual Tuesday Talk of the year on November 28th with a fascinating historical perspective on the formation of American Christmas traditions by Tufts Professor Ken Turino.

Many of our traditional Christmas traditions date back only to the mid-nineteenth century. Professor Turino will discuss how female abolitionists on the North Shore and throughout the country contributed to their development. He looks at women's Sewing Circles here and abroad which contributed a wide array of goods for sale at Christmas fairs, which in turn, had a wide-ranging influence on our customs, including the inclusion of Christmas trees and greenery in decorating and the practice of gift giving.

Tickets are free for members of the Chatham Historical Society, $10 for non-members and are available by reservation through the Historical Society's website. Link to the Zoom presentation, which begins promptly at 5 p.m. on the 28th, will be provided at time of reservation.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
