North (Nauset) Beach Status

Due to estimated hatch dates, Chatham’s portion of Nauset Beach (aka North Beach) is scheduled to close to Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) travel at 11 AM on Monday, June 3rd, to protect unfledged piping plovers.

Please note that this timing may change based on various biological factors. If eggs hatch earlier than expected, the beach may close before June 3rd. If this occurs, rangers will notify vehicles on the beach to leave immediately.

Piping plovers arrived and began nesting early this year, leading to imminent hatching activity. This earlier arrival, nesting, and hatching may result in an earlier reopening for OSV access this summer, if the hatchings are successful. All regulations regarding restrictions on access to endangered species habitat areas, dogs, and other beach regulations remain in full force.

We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining beach access.

MassHCIC Summer All-Stars

On Tuesday, May 28th the Select Board heard a presentation from Rob Brennan, Board member of the Massachusetts Housing and Climate Innovation Center (MassHCIC) on the organizations Summer All-Stars program and signed on as a municipal partner for the 2024 season.

The program is based on the same concept of as the Cape Cod Baseball League - bring promising talent from colleges and universities across the country to the Cape for 8 weeks in the summer and let them hone their skills for the next step in their careers. Instead of playing baseball the MassHCIC Summer All-Stars will be working as a cohort to identify and catalogue resources that may be serve in the future as platforms for deploying, testing, or evaluating the efficacy of promising innovations in the areas of housing and climate and compile the information into a "Innovation Opportunity Atlas."

Undergraduate and graduate students from Boston College, Harvard University, Wentworth Institute of Technology and the University of Kansas will stay with host families on Cape for 8 weeks and work with staff members in participating towns to identify and access Town-owned built and natural resources. The Town is contributing $2,500 towards the student/host stipend.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
