Winter Storm Preparedness

With the temperature plummeting tonight and a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday until 8 p.m. on Monday, take steps now to prepare!

Build a household emergency kit that contains items to sustain you and your family’s specific needs if you are not able to leave your home – water, flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food (don’t forget your pets!) are a few basics.

Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Turn off water supply to outside spigots and unheated areas to avoid frozen/burst pipes.

Prepare for power outages. Keep your cell phone/devices and auxiliary power banks charged.

Be a good neighbor. Check in with anyone that may need assistance in making their preparations for the storm.

If you live in an area that experiences coastal flooding during storms, consider staying elsewhere.

Please stay home and off the roads on Sunday unless absolutely necessary to allow our crews to keep them clear for emergency responders.

Personal Care Site at Community Center

A Personal Care Site will open at the Chatham Community Center, 702 Main Street, on Monday, January 26th from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. to allow residents an opportunity to warm up and recharge their phones and other electronic devices in the event of power outages.

Personal care sites do not provide meals or overnight accommodations and are available only during posted hours.

If a resident needs a place to warm up and recharge devices outside of posted personal care site hours, the Chatham Police Department is open 24 hours every day.

If you have general storm related questions or concerns or require transportation to the personal care site, please call the Emergency Operations Center at 508-945-5191. For emergencies dial 9-1-1!

Delayed Openings Monday

Due to the forecasted storm, Chatham Town Offices, the Center for Active Living and the Transfer Station will delay opening until 12 noon on Monday, January 26th.

If conditions warrant, the closures may extend to the full day. That determination will be made on Sunday evening. Please monitor Chatham's social media sites and the Town's website for updates.

Candidate Nomination Information

On Thursday, May 14th, Chatham voters will head to the polls to elect:

  • One Select Board Member
  • One Housing Authority Member
  • Two Monomoy Regional School District Committee Members

Are you considering throwing your hat in the ring?

Nomination papers to be a candidate for any of these positions in the 2026 Annual Town Election will be available on Monday, February 2nd and must be returned to the Town Clerk's Office by Thursday, March 26th.

Candidates should obtain at least 55 signatures and street addresses (no post office boxes) from Chatham registered voters. A minimum of 41 signatures are required for certification, but the Town Clerk recommends additional signatures are obtained as too often signatures are of individuals registered to vote elsewhere, do not list a correct voting address, or are not legible.

Will You Help a Neighbor?

With the adoption of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 60, Section 3D by vote at the 2025 Annual Town Meeting, Chatham’s Taxation Aid Fund was established. Its purpose is to aid low-income elderly, and low-income disabled taxpayers defray their property tax liability.

All money collected for the Taxation Aid Fund is through voluntary donations dedicated directly to the Fund and are not part of the Town’s budget.

Donations can be made on-line at City Hall Systems, in person or by mail.

Please make checks payable to: Chatham Taxation Aid Fund (Please indicate “Taxation Aid Fund” on your check). Mail to: Chatham Taxation Aid Fund, 549 Main Street, Chatham, MA 02633.

2026 Parade Theme Submissions Wanted

With just over six months to go, the Independence Day Parade Committee (IDPC) is calling on the community to help craft a theme that captures the spirit of Chatham during a truly milestone year. 2026 marks the 250th Birthday of the United States, and while we can’t promise powdered wigs or quill pens, we can promise a parade worthy of the occasion—Chatham style.

The IDPC will select the winning theme based on its relevance to Chatham, the parade, America’s Semi-quincentennial, and the people who make our community special. So, dust off those revolutionary ideas and submit your best red-white-and-blue theme suggestion by February 18, 2026. The winner will earn the honor of serving as one of this year’s parade judges.

The committee looks forward to your entries and another fabulous parade as Chatham celebrates 250 years of American independence.

Submit your theme idea at: www.chathamparade.com by February 18th, and don’t forget to include a brief description explaining why your theme will make Chatham's parade one for the history books!

Select Board Action – January 20th

The Select Board re-appointed Carol Gordon to the Board of Health until June 30, 2026.

Town Manager Jill R. Goldsmith and Director of Finance Carrie Mazerolle presented the preliminary FY2027 budget to the Select Board. Town Manager Goldsmith said the proposed budget funds level services for the community.

Director Mazerolle previewed the Town’s digital budget book available on the Town’s website and demonstrated how to navigate the document.

Director Mazerolle reviewed estimated revenues that fund the operating budget, the largest percentage of which is 64% from property taxes. Local receipts such as meals tax, fees, short-term and traditional lodging taxes comprise 15% of the Town’s revenue. She noted that 14% of the revenue comes from other available funds such as the Waterways User Fee, Community Preservation Act funds, Chapter 90 funds, PEG Access funds, Revolving funds and Free Cash.

Director Mazerolle reviewed estimated expenditures in the Operating, Water & Capital Budgets and for School Assessments. She said the Operating Budget is proposed at a 5.3% increase over FY2026. She noted areas of increase include contractual obligations, utility costs, and property and health insurance costs.

Director Mazerolle discussed the Town’s authorized and unissued debt. She said the Town has $471,142,081 available below its debt limit. She reviewed the 5-year Capital Plan.

Director Mazerolle reviewed potential articles that may be brought to Annual Town Meeting for funding outside of the Operating and Capital Budgets and their potential funding sources.

Projects that may potentially be funded with Community Preservation Act funds were reviewed. The Community Preservation Committee received applications that exceed their available funds so not all will be placed as articles on the 2026 Annual Town Meeting warrant.

The public is encouraged to watch the meeting in its entirety through Chatham TV’s on-demand archive.

Select Board Vision Statement

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
