SEASONAL Natural Resource Department Staffing Vacancies

Chatham seeks qualified individuals to fill the following seasonal positions in the Natural Resources Department: Deputy Shellfish Wardens; Shellfish Propagation Specialist; North Nauset Beach Patrol Officer; Shorebird Monitors; Patrol Boat Operator/Assistant Harbormaster; Patrol Boat Crewmember (EMT); Assistant Wharfinger; Town Landing Officer. Full- and Part-Time positions available mid-May through October 2018, some up to 40 hrs/wk.; Early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts available. Certifications required for some positions. Chatham seeks qualified individuals to join our Summer Team! Seasonal indoor and outdoor positions with early morning, mid-day and afternoon shifts available. All positions subject to CORI review. Some positions require Lifeguard Training or equivalent, Standard First Aid, and Professional Rescuer BLS/CPR or Water Safety Instructor Certification. Most positions are available from June through the Labor Day holiday (9/3/18). Pay rates range from $11.00/hr up to $20.00/hr. Rate of pay will depend on the position filled as well as applicant’s experience and qualifications.

Local Building Inspector

The Town of Chatham is seeking applications for the position of Local Building Inspector.  This position is a full time, 40 hour a week, position which is part of the Chatham Municipal Employees Association.  The Local Building Inspector provides administrative, supervisory and technical work connected with the interpretation, processing and enforcement of 780 CMR of the Massachusetts State Building Code and the Zoning By-Laws under the general direction of the Building Commissioner and Community Development Director.  The duties for this position include office and field work. Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent with Associate’s degree preferred; 5 years of construction experience with a thorough knowledge of all phases of construction; Massachusetts’s certificate as a certified Building Inspector or, examination approval by the Massachusetts Building Official certification committee  anddemonstrated ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hiring; Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex concepts to lay people and to resolve issues with contractors; Sufficient proficiency to maintain computer-based permitting and permit-tracking software; Valid Class C driver’s license. Starting pay rate is $2,429.60/bi-weekly, with pension and benefit eligibility.

Conservation Agent

Town of Chatham seeks qualified candidates to serve as year-round full-time engaged and forward-thinking Conservation Agent. Chatham is at the forefront of public sector policy related to coastal issues and water quality. Position is appointed by the Town Manager and reports to award-winning Director of Natural Resources. Responsibilities include: Managing technical, administrative, and inspection work for Conservation Commission and Conservation Division, under general supervision; Supervising Assistant Conservation Agent and Department Secretary. Works with general public, permit applicants, professional representatives, regional, state and federal agencies, public and private environmental interest organizations and other town staff to provide project review, technical assistance/public outreach, field inspections, and enforcement actions, implementing  the Chatham Wetlands Protection Bylaw (Ch. 272), Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (M.G.L. Ch. 131 §40), and associated regulations. Serves as staff liaison to Conservation Commission, Land Bank/Open Space Committee, and other entities as assigned. Attends all Commission meetings, provides support and guidance developing agendas, researching legal and technical issues, preparing and presenting staff reports, writing Orders of Conditions, and guiding the Commission on issuance of permits. Responsible for management of conservation lands within oversight of the Conservation Commission. Min. Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Wetland Science, Environmental Law, Natural Resource Science, or related field, plus 4 yrs exp. in wetlands protection/conservation  and regulatory administration; Experience administering the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act in a coastal environment preferred. MA Association of Conservation Commissions Fundamentals Certificate required within 1 year; Working knowledge of local flora and fauna, best practices for landscaping & erosion control techniques and resource protection strategies; Ability to effectively communicate and present verbally and in writing with Commission, town officials, other agencies, and general public; Valid MA driver’s license; Ability to perform field inspections, read/interpret plans and evaluate projects.Frequent walking, climbing, reaching, bending, and lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds, over varied terrain and under varied weather conditions. Position recognized in the Chatham Municipal Employees Association and benefits eligible. FY18 pay range for this position is $2,429.60  to $2,960.00 bi-weekly. Police Dispatcher

Chatham seeks a qualified multi-tasker with calm demeanor to fill the position of Police Dispatcher. Responsibilities include receiving and transmitting written and oral communications from the public and law enforcement personnel so that appropriate actions can be taken or assistance dispatched. Requires excellent listening and customer service skills, as well as ability to learn and follow response protocols Requires comfort using computers and other communication equipment to receive and transmit information. Work volume and pace vary substantially during and between shifts. Nature of position requires the ability to function smoothly within a high stress environment and to maintain confidentiality of sensitive law enforcement and potentially personal information. Work shifts and days off rotate to support the department’s 24-hour operation. The successful candidate will be at least 21 years of age, have at least a high school diploma, with college preferred, and complete a background investigation. Position is full time (40hrs/wk) eligible for overtime, benefits and pension. Current pay range is $20.07 - $26.65/hr through June 2018.

Part-Time Intermittent Solid Waste Transfer Station Gate Attendant

The Town of Chatham is currently accepting applications for the part-time intermittent position of Transfer Station Gate Attendant. This is a short-term position to provide intermittent coverage for the Transfer Station Gate. The position is responsible for controlling traffic in and out of the Solid Waste Transfer Station, primarily on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7:30a to 4:00p. Employee must walk around moving vehicles and lift tarps to inspect loads, to ensure only acceptable waste enters the facility, and proper fees are electronically recorded (entered into the computer system) and collected.  Employee verifies that vehicles have valid user permits; directs customers to proper material areas; explains recycling operations and procedures; records all transactions; enters data to collect cash, check and credit card fees for users who are not permit holders; enters data to weigh commercial vehicles using the facility; and provides receipts for all deliveries. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; ability to learn and operate computerized scale; ability to properly and politely explain and enforce facility regulations; ability to follow safety protocols. This intermittent position may be required to work weekend hours 7:30 am to 4:00 pm and will work less than 19.5 hours/week.  $18.54/hr. (no benefits).
