Water Service Line Inventory

  1. Step 1: Locate Your Water Service

Your water service likely enters your home at its lowest level through the foundation wall, or could be located within a crawl space, and will be located before your water meter.

  2. Step 2: Determine Service Line Material

Determining the material of your service line may be obvious upon visual inspection, if the material is plastic or copper. If it is not, you may need a magnet or a key, coin, or flathead screwdriver to lightly scratch the pipe.

    • Plastic - non-magnetic, usually blue or black but may be white
    • Galvanized - magnetic, dull gray; may become rust looking due to oxidation, also known as iron or steel
    • Lead - non-magnetic, dull silver-gray color, soft and easily scratched (scratched area becomes shiny like a new nickel)
    • Copper - non-magnetic, may have a blue-green or brown-green discoloration due to oxidation, old copper will become shiny like a new penny when scratched
